Planning was approved by the council in April 2026 for Microsoft to build three data centres and a warehouse across 48 acres of land, subject to the tech company meeting a number of conditions. The campaign group, who were joined on Saturday (12th September) by the likes of the Leeds Green Party and Leeds East MP Richard Burgon, are calling for an immediate moratorium/pause on the construction of AI data centres - due to concerns regarding water usage, noise & air pollution and the impact on the local community. A spokesperson for Microsoft told us back in August that they were in contact with campaigners to discuss their concerns and claims about energy use, carbon emissions and water consumption that “do not reflect the facts”. A statement added: “The proposed datacentre would be air cooled for more than 95% of the time… we match all our energy use with renewable energy in the UK and Microsoft remains committed to our goals of becoming carbon negative, water positive and zero waste by 2030.” 🗣️ A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “The council’s role as the local planning authority for Leeds is a strictly impartial one. “The council is also required to have regard to the Government’s recognition of data centres as critical national infrastructure. “All relevant matters – including design, scale, landscape integration, highway safety, sustainability and amenity impacts – were given full and proper consideration”.
