@dershpiel: Jewish billionaire Ari Emanuel is making a massive $6 billion bet on live entertainment, with his company acquiring a theater business that includes seven major Broadway theaters and 10 theaters in London’s West End. The Broadway properties include some of New York’s best-known theaters, including the St. James, August Wilson, Eugene O’Neill, Walter Kerr, Hudson, Lyric and Al Hirschfeld theaters. The deal makes Emanuel one of the biggest players on Broadway, giving his company control of theaters where some of the world’s largest live productions are performed. Emanuel built his career into one of Hollywood’s most powerful executives and previously led WME, one of the world’s biggest talent agencies. His growing entertainment company also owns businesses including TodayTix, Frieze and major sports and live-event properties. Emanuel said the purchase is a long-term bet on live entertainment, arguing that even as the entertainment industry changes, people still want to experience major performances in person.
