i would like to add, as a prairie native, that some people get confused about the idea of white sage having such a small native range because prairie sage is often referred to as white sage. for anyone thinking “but i’ve seen it in minnesota/north dakota/iowa/etc,” you are thinking of prairie sage :) prairie sage is sacred to my people and many other native people across the plains because it has a much larger native range. however!! i personally still see it as a closed practice even though prairie sage is honestly quite abundant these days, though obviously not as much as it once was. it’s still sacred to us, the land is still harmed by taking it en-mass, BUT!! it’s technically not white sage, it’s a sacred sage that is white. pidamayaye for fighting the good fight when it comes to our sacred medicines :)

I’m pagan and a practicing witch, there’s SOOOOO many better smudge plants and incense plants that are exactly for what my fellow white people think White Sage is for. Copal/Pine, Frankincense, Myrrh, Benzoin, Cedar, Juniper, Rosemary, Dragons Blood, Amber, etc and that’s just to name a few. I’d say Palo Santo too but that’s a mixed bag which leans into the White Sage territory (granted it’s sourced via a very specific method which also kinda ensures its longevity as a resource but it’s still somewhat in an ethical grey zone imo)

Gabrielino here! They were poaching the sage field my grandparents helped preserved (Etiwanda). We were one of the nations that got the sage back. My dad is also in that documentary!

Thank you oh my god. It’s very hard being a native person who works closely with tribes in Southern California try to explain this to people from all over who just won’t listen. Tribes have done the work to make documentaries and explain the poaching issue and no one gets it

As a native person, thank you for speaking on this! And like you pointed out, there are plenty of other types of sage or other herbs that are quite common in many different practices across the world to use if someone wants to use them for whatever type of smoke cleansing they want to engage with that is not from a non-closed practice or using a sacred and ecologically vulnerable species that is being literally stolen from the indigenous people trying to protect it.

we've almost wiped out California white sage by poaching it. poachers only exist because there is demand to buy it. idk why this is so hard for people to understand.

I may be wrong about this, but for a while there it seemed like shops stopped carrying white sage because more people were aware of the poaching. But in the last year or two, I've seen it pop up again at nearly every metaphysical shop I go to. When I ask if it's ethically sourced, not a single shop has been able to say yes.

Do people not realize that many of these plants are being overharvested or poached from Indigenous lands, putting wild populations at risk? This is why ethically and sustainably sourcing herbs and other sacred plants is so important.

you shouldn't generally be using white sage even if you are practicing. sage is a neutralizer, meaning it removes both negative AND positive energy. rosemary is always the better alternative for removing negative without touching the positive.
