@maxwellcreatestuff: Huge shoutout to Jay for this fact - potentially another fact from him coming soon! Although it’s not entirely true it was certainly an interesting one to research. I know we got two language ones back to back, but it’s always fun to see how languages effect the way we view the world. The Ted Talk I viewed had a very interesting take on this fact. Not only concluding that the lack of Subjunctive Mood made them incapable of understanding regret, but also as the sole reason that Vietnam was ranked highly as a happy nation (Ted Talk from 2013, Phil Tran). #vietnam #vietnamese #linguistics #happiness #factcheck

in Vietnamese, we don't change verbs in different context (present/past) or mood. We add other words to express different scenarios!

the lack of linguistic feature doesn't mean there's no concept of what that feature accomodates. of course they still worry about what they could have, would have, or should have done.

i'm Vietnamese and we would say "giá như mà..." or "biết trước như vậy thì..." which loosely translate to, if i had known blablabla, I would have done blablabla. So we do say it, but our grammar is a lot easier than English

As a Vietnamese and a native vietnamese speaker and a bilingual person; the 1st dude is insane… our grammar structures are completely different compare to the english language but doesnt mean what ever the f he just said; we just frame things differently

I think the way people compare languages and the gaps between them and argue that one language is more emotional or deep or whatever is especially annoying. Especially when it comes from progressive people trying to make English seem inferior. Evangelizing a language as exceptionally complex or, again, emotional is still racist.

What the guy is saying is a common thing among English speakers, where they try to form an opinion on a society based solely on the linguistic features, isolating those features from nuance or context. This whole "in viet they aren't stuck in the past" or "in arabic they say that sadness is going through them and not a part of them, so they aren't depressed" is dehumanizing, since it positions foreign cultures as more enlightened and angelic, and not as real and human. Even if it's positive it is still orientalism.

Vietnamese has a very simple grammar, which I think makes people believe it lacks certain features. They don't change the verb or the word itself; they just add some 'support words.' For example, they use 'đã' before a verb for the past tense. So technically, Vietnamese is like playing Lego: you just take this word and that word, and it becomes a sentence. 👀

The lack of a grammatical future subjunctive doesn’t mean that we lack hypothetical thinking. If we didn’t worry about hypotheticals, why do my family and some of my friends always worry that I’ll die alone when I say I might not get married? 😅😅😅
