In 1956, the UN asked the people of British Togoland to choose: join independent Ghana, or stay separate. Many Ewe communities hoped to stay separate and reunite with family across the border in French Togoland. But 58% voted to join, and on March 6, 1957, the Volta Region was born. That vote never fully settled. Calls for a separate Western Togoland still surface today. The Ewe’s history here runs even deeper: their escape from a tyrant’s rule in Notsie is honored every year at the Hogbetsotso Festival, alongside their own kente tradition, Agbamevo, woven along the Volta River since the 1600s. Africa’s borders were drawn by European invaders. Its people are still deciding what comes next.
