@doctoradaniela.md: how did no one bully this out of me as a child?? does this make me a no sabo #medschool #medstudent #newdoctor #bilingualproblems #latinasinmedicine
Patients are just happy that they can talk to you in their language! It makes it easier for them. They aren’t worried about how you speak as much as the fact that they can talk to you. If it bothers you you can do certain exercises to help with your r’s

100% patients prefer we speak to them directly. Even if it’s not perfect. You got this girl!

Personally I don’t think the impediment matters as long as you can explain everything clearly. +Being able to speak directly to your doctor is such a luxury so please keep doing it.+you won’t get better if you don’t practice.

Hablas español de una manera hermosa, no dejes de ser ese puente que necesitamos los hispanohablantes; y siempre puedes utilizar “sin embargo” en vez de “pero” y suena más formal.

A direct form of communication will never be better than speaking through an interpreter. I understand what you mean, so I’d recommend getting a speech therapy whenever you get the chance and have time, but in the mean time you could disclose your speech impediment beforehand to address the elephant in the room and then move on. I hope you feel comfortable enough and not have any patients make you feel bad because you’d be exposing yourself for their benefit even if they don’t know it. Good luck and congratulations!

Your Spanish is amazing!! I would definitely encourage you to continue speaking Spanish to your patients, it creates a unique bond that interpreter services cannot mirror. And btw, the concern you have about it sounding like fart in Spanish is your mind totally tricking you, I can assure you that whenever we hear someone trying to speak in our language, we really don’t care about any mistakes or how words sound ✨🤍

Get a small marvel or button and put it on your tongue (or small candy). Say pe and when you say -ro, caddle the button in your tongue and touch the top of the roof of your mouth with the tip of the tongue. Do it exaggerated at first and then more normally. I rather have a doctor that cares enough to speak my language even with a speech impediment than have to go through a translator

Girl, no one is perfect. Acknowledge it, if you want. I joke about my español del rancho and move on with clients. It makes them and me feel at home to speak in Spanish. No one is perfect. Actually a little imperfection makes you more approachablw and likeable.

Your Spanish is really good! I don’t think they would care if you pronounced it differently and if not you can say “sin embargo”. I’m sure you make them feel much more comfortable

Your Spanish is great. Patients prefer 100 times talking directly to their doctor than using an interpreter.

Just remember that most clinics require providers to pass a language test to use a non-English language with a patient (liability). If you pass it then YES, hay que hablar en español. It does wonders for building confianza.

I think speaking to patients in spanish helps them feel more comfortable and connected because it shows you care and it’s just way better than waiting for the interpreter to say everything word for word

Biohazard021 :
Ask the patients. Let them know you will speak to them in Spanish if they are ok with it, and if at any point they would like the interpreter that you are happy to stop and get that for them because you know your Spanish isn't perfect. It allows them to have autonomy and feel empowered to make the choice. Some will want the interpreter because it's an important conversation, and most will be ok with face to face and appreciate the effort.
