what’s ur rent budget?? Tbh most even ~far from luxury~ apts are 2k+ for a 1 bd in a decent area. Gas is usually $5-6/gallon. A lunch anywhere is $15-20 and dinner double that + $15-22 per cocktail. Hard to make ends meet making less than $32+/hr without roommates IMO

Don’t move without a job, and make sure it pays well. I had moved with my bf initially and after breaking up my pay wasn’t enough for my own place. I rent a room for 2k and it’s a struggle getting by with my other bills. There’s cheaper places but I wanted a safe central area, ac in this heat, parking, and laundry in unit. If you’re willing to not have some of that then you might save.

Find a furnished sublet for your first few months so you can test it out no commitment

It’s not as expensive as ppl think. Just get a place for $1,300 to start and you’ll be good

Was reading some of these comments and I totally agree that the rental market moves FAST. you’ll need to be ready to move in within a month (for the most part) BUT you can usually ask to do a face time tour and a lot of people are willing to help if you’re out of state (coming from someone who used to lease up properties) as far as things being expensive… I moved here 6 years ago from the Midwest and I always tell people that you can 100% keep your living expenses relatively low and you don’t need to go out to drink anymore everyday because there is an abundance of free things to do and just being outside year round is worth allll the money in the world! Happy for you!

if you don't have a good job and a hefty savings, don't do it.

I just moved here!!! And yes rent and gas is a lot but there’s soo many fun free things to do and you’ll spend half your time at the beach anyways and it’s so so worth it. I actually don’t think you can go wrong with anywhere you live. I have friends that live in Carlsbad, Saint Marcos, PB, Encinitas and Oceanside and I love them all! And I live in Del Mar. I felt this exact same way before moving and promise it’s going to be ok!!! If you have any questions lmk :) I remember being so stressed at confused. Also it has been way easier to get around than I thought, and there’s so much to do everywhere.

The rental market moves super quick here with lots of PM companies not wanting applications unless you can move in 14-30 days. It may be worth finding a 1 or 2 month sublet from a student in UTC or college area, and then you can figure out which neighborhood is your vibe and find a place that way!!

I would recommend : pacific beach, bankers hill, north park, ocean beach, little Italy. all great areas depends what you’re looking for / ur vibe but as being new to a city this would have you walking distance. if ur worried about about costs i found a random roommate on facebook pages when i first moved and we lived together for 2 years! BUT i have also been able to live alone as a teacher the past 2 years. I think it helps to figure out your non negotiable in a place and what you’re willing to give up ( ex: no in unit laundry etc.)

The idea may feel so scary I totally get that, but I promise you it is soooooo beyond worth it! Take that leap, you’ll take on any challenge you have. It is exspensive but San Diego is amazing and you’ll realize you’re paying for the lifestyle , amazing weather, awesome things to do everyday, amazing people, community, the beach, etc. . You can decide if it’s worth that but I have a feeling you will want to after being here It’s a dream, area wise, north park, pacific beach, La Jolla, bankers hill are top choices,

If you don’t make 50+ and hrs you’ll struggle. If you’re coming here to build your life, roommate with someone. San Diego is fun but you will need to hustle.

Have an apartment or place to stay lined up, a job lined up, friends lined up. Basically everything to have your anxiety die down. I jumped into it and it was honestly terrible so give yourself time and breathe you got this!

I’ve lived in sd for 3 years and I’m trying to move to Del Mar in late October! I love San Diego more than anything it is the best place ever. So much to do, so many different types of lifestyles and people. Tbh I’m moving to north county for a more balanced life and I’m so excited. pb and more central sd is fun and all but sometimes hard to meet like minded ppl.

i moved here a year ago & would just recommend having a job lined up! it is expensive but as long as you budget and manage your money well it’s okay😇 i live in mission valley i enjoy it, very central to everything

Depending on where you’re moving from, it truly is not as expensive as people say. I moved from Portland Oregon and find it pretty comparable if not less expensive at times than Portland! Rent is my only noticeably higher expense, but you’re able to find cute places for a decent price as long as you keep up on the hunt!!! Don’t be scared, it’ll be the best move of your life 😊❤️

You can do it! Get a roommate or two and you’ll be totally fine, go on Facebook there’s a ton of groups of people looking for roommates. A lot of people do just fine making ~50-60k a year! You can do so much for free too
