My mom wouldn't let me take my favorite Jacket to England because it would: "make me look like a tourist" and she didn't want anyone to know we were American. Upon arriving, she told the first person we saw that we were Americans. She also did this at every restaurant we went to, with every taxi driver we met, and with anyone else that she even somewhat interacted with.
