Milton Friedman famously argued in the 1970s that a country cannot simultaneously have open borders and a welfare state. His core viewpoint was that free immigration is an excellent economic policy, but it becomes financially unsustainable when combined with government-funded social services. Seems he was correct.

Conveniently leaving out that Sweden had a leftist social democratic goverment from 2014-2022 that gave record amount of asylum and gang violence. That changed in October 2022 when a right-wing nationalist government coalition took power and cut crime, migration to record lows AND still reducing lines at the hospitals in the country. The Sweden Democrats are socially right-wing but economically centre to centre-left and that is why they are winning the votes of former SocDem voters who are not happy with the S party.

Hi! 👋🏻 A Swede here.. To clarify the key take away and not get stuck in left vs right politics. Swedens political history demonstrates that no system or political ideology is flawless and has its own timing for when it's applied successfully - especially applied in moderation. Being able to look past ideology and deal with situations at hand is what has built resilience. Left wing (not extreme left to be clear) policies brought us a lot of good during its time. Since 2015 we've been in need of more right wing policies (not extreme right to be clear) to balance changes that were damaging to our society. To be able to disconnect from the idea that an ideology in its totality is "the right answer", at all, times is absolutely crucial. You can be left wing and still agree with policies from the right wing and vice versa. It doesn't have to be your whole identity what side of the political spectrum you're on. The engineer-point is to take a problem solving-approach based on facts and data rather than emotional and ideological. Which culturally is very Swedish to do (..meaning we're also perceived as cold and detached since we act less on emotions visibly).

It's not that black and white. During that socialist period, Sweden also built Absolut Vodka, Ericsson, IKEA and a whole music industry, ever heard of ABBA or Roxette? Making sure the working class had enough money was crucial to also drive demand in the economy.
