THROWBACK THURSDAY This was a training mission in Hawaii in 2008. I was a sniper team leader, and we had just wrapped up a large-scale training op—one we were the sniper asset on. This is right after it ended—when I met Doc Mann for the first time. That moment marked the beginning of a hell of a friendship. Doc Mann was always a hard worker. He was good at his job, professional, and he cared. But more than that—he represented something deeper. If you’ve ever worn the uniform, you know there’s a special place in Marines’ hearts for Navy corpsmen. From corpsmen like Doc Cannon, Doc Coddington, to Doc Mann— these incredible human beings were, in my eyes, sent down by God as the Valkyries for Marines. They are our angels. For those who don’t know—the Marine Corps doesn’t have its own medical. It’s the Navy that provides it. And those specific people are called Navy Corpsmen. And while corpsmen may wear Navy uniforms, to us—and to many—they’re Marines through and through. So while this is a Throwback Thursday, today is also a day of appreciation—for all the incredible Navy corpsmen out there who take care of Marines, and whose love for Marines runs deeper than their love for themselves.
