Low fog rolled in on the coast, and we’ve got 200nm to go. Mike wants to go left and try staying under the clouds on the coast…the risk being that the clouds will get too low to continue and we will have to camp on the beach or turn back. I want to see if there is a way through the mountain passes to the right where I know there is sunshine…the risk here being if we find a clear path up and over the mountains, we may not have a clear path back down to our destination. This is a look at how we discuss our options, and always have a backup plan. When flying VFR like this, it is absolutely imperative to never ever fly into the clouds. Without visual reference to the ground, there is a high probability of a fatal outcome. It’s a non negotiable. Always have a plan A, B and C…and even a plan F. We are two very experienced pilots with a lifetime of local knowledge. We carry plenty of camping, survival and remote communications gear and have been flying together for almost 2 decades, understand each others risk tolerances and preferences.
