@raising.autism: Sitting in those meetings and having to read off every single weakness just to get your child basic support breaks a part of you every time. To the parents who know this specific weight—I see you. 🤍 #autismmom #specialneedsmom #AutismParenting #SpecialNeedsParenting #AutismAwareness
We were really lucky to have fantastic supports at school for my son. He is now in 8th grade, advanced math with straight As. The beginning was a struggle but he’s amazing and doing so well now. ❤️

I dreaded every single IEP meeting, I always left feeling defeated. He is now in 8th grade with zero intervention and 3.5 gpa! It does get better!!🥺

Just had to bring an advocate in with me and my husband to the school bc they’re discriminating against my autistic son! They quickly changed their tone when we all arrived

I was on an IEP in high school for my epilepsy and watched my mom advocate for me in sometimes an extremely cruel way because she refused to let them make me feel less than because I needed help. It prepared me to fight even harder for my autistic daughter. My daughter is non verbal so I have to be her voice and I’ve learned to take control of every meeting about her and have no issue looking people in the eye and saying “no” or “this meeting isn’t over yet because you’re not listening”

I literally remember attending my daughters first IEP meeting I was in literal tears in front of complete strangers because it made me feel like I wasn't doing enough for my daughter and it made me feel like a horrible parent😭. we go back for another IEP meeting in a couple months I really hope I don't break down again 🙏

I had a meeting last year and cried - because her whole team spoke about all the good things!! I cried because they were speaking about the person I see and you never get to hear the good things!

Every meeting I shoehorn in how caring, witty, kind and loving she is. It's never for them, it's to make myself feel less guilty. I know help is based purely off of her struggles, but having to sit for an hour and feel like I'm slagging her off breaks my heart.

I always start with their struggles now I start with their strengths so they understand how big their struggles are seems to have us heard a lot more.

Dominate those meetings! Walk in there and speak with your WHOLE chest momma! Nobody knows your kids strengths and weaknesses better than you.
