And unfortunately, this isn’t unusual. Sometimes women have children who need them. Sometimes they are caring for a child with special needs. Sometimes they’re dealing with their own limitations. Sometimes they’re navigating an ex who creates constant emergencies. Sometimes they’re in and out of court or dealing with the demands of a custody case. Whatever the reason, the reality is the same: Traditional employment often doesn’t leave much room for a complicated life. And when you don’t have flexibility, every unexpected problem can threaten your income. That’s one reason I’m so passionate about service-based businesses for divorced women who are rebuilding their financial lives. You can create something around the life you actually have. Maybe you work three days a week. Maybe you only take clients during school hours. Maybe you work every other week when your children are with their other parent. Maybe you build several small income streams around your schedule. You don’t have to ask a boss for permission every time your life happens. A service-based business isn’t the answer for everyone.
