@channelnewsasia: A flash flood at Chiang Mai's Mae Sa Waterfall swept several tourists away on Saturday (Aug 15), leaving some with minor cuts and bruises, according to media reports. Park officials had reportedly warned visitors to leave the water after noticing unusual signs, but the flood arrived before some could get out. All were later rescued by park rangers, with one person reportedly taken to hospital for further examination. Access to the waterfall was temporarily closed. #thailand #thailandnews #flood
I checked. They all escaped with just minor injuries.

My parents always say never play the in river/waterfall during monsoon/rainy season because we didn't know if it's raining or not in the headwaters. case like this happens a lot in here.

Not flash flood but headwater surge. This usually happens when there's heavy rain up the mountains and causes the river to suddenly overflow. So it's very important to check the Weather Apps whenever you're going for a river or waterfall picnic, especially in countries with monsoon or rainy seasons.

Voice of Reason :
The phenomenon is known as 'headwater surge', a sudden surge of water flowing from the upper reaches of a river, even when there is no rainfall in downstream areas. It can cause the river's water level to rise dramatically within just a few minutes. Usually there is natural signs before it happens. There would be surge of bubbles flowing from upstream and by the time the water gets murky it already too late.

It's the rainy season, so why do people dare to go to waterfalls, like the football academy team who went into the cave in Chiang Rai? 😳
