Repeated or prolonged exposure to chemicals can increase the risk of developing skin sensitivity or an allergic reaction. In recent years, there has been increased awareness of contact dermatitis associated with gel nail products. One contributing factor is improper curing. When gel products are not fully cured according to the manufacturer’s instructions, uncured or incompletely cured reactive ingredients can remain in the product and may come into prolonged contact with the skin and nail plate. Repeated exposure to these ingredients can increase the risk of sensitization and contact dermatitis. This does not mean gel products inherently cause contact dermatitis, nor does it mean other nail products are risk-free. Proper application, avoiding skin contact, following manufacturer curing instructions, and minimizing chemical exposure are important with any nail product.
