💚 When PIP asks how far you can walk, simply saying “I can walk” doesn’t tell the whole story. This is one of the most important things to understand when completing the mobility section of a PIP claim. You might think: “Well, I CAN walk, so surely I won’t qualify for mobility.” But the rules look at much more than whether you are physically capable of putting one foot in front of the other. The Moving Around activity considers how far you can stand and then move, and whether you can do so reliably. That means thinking about whether you can do it: ✅ Safely ✅ To an acceptable standard ✅ Repeatedly ✅ Within a reasonable time So when you’re answering questions about walking, think about what REALLY happens. 🚶 How far can you walk before you need to stop? Do pain, breathlessness, weakness, dizziness or fatigue make you stop? Do you need a stick, frame or another person to help you? How long do you need to rest afterwards? Could you walk the same distance again later? Does walking that distance leave you unable to do other things for the rest of the day? ❤️ These details can matter enormously. For example, instead of simply writing: ❌ “I can walk about 100 metres.” you might accurately need to explain something like: “I can walk approximately 100 metres, but my legs begin to ache and I become breathless. I have to stop and rest before continuing, and I couldn’t reliably repeat that distance shortly afterwards.” Or instead of: ❌ “I can walk to the shops.” explain what actually happens: How far away are the shops? Do you have to stop? Do you lean on a trolley? Do you need somebody with you? Could you walk home again? What happens afterwards? 💚 Real examples from your everyday life can help give a much clearer picture. The PIP Moving Around activity uses specific distance bands, including 20 metres, 50 metres and 200 metres, so try to think realistically about distances you regularly encounter. As a rough visual guide: 🚗 A few average parked cars can help you picture a short distance. 🏊 A standard swimming pool can help you visualise around 25 metres. But don’t guess if you don’t have to. You could measure a familiar route or use a mapping tool to get a better idea of the distance. ⚠️ Most importantly: be completely honest. Don’t exaggerate what you can’t do — but equally, don’t underestimate your difficulties because you’ve become used to living with them. And remember, PIP isn’t awarded simply because someone has cancer. It depends on how your health conditions affect the particular daily-living and mobility activities covered by PIP. If you’re unsure how the rules apply to you, consider getting help from Macmillan, Citizens Advice or a welfare-rights adviser. 📌 SAVE THIS POST if you’re completing a PIP application. 📤 SHARE IT with somebody who is applying or waiting for an assessment. ❤️ FOLLOW Cancer Benefits UK for straightforward information about PIP, Universal Credit, ESA, Attendance Allowance, grants and other financial help after a cancer diagnosis. 👇 Did you know that PIP looks at whether you can repeat a walking distance — not simply whether you can walk it once? #CancerBenefitsUK #PIP #PIPMobility #PersonalIndependencePayment #PIPForm
