KARMELO ANTHONY NEW TRIAL HEARING — WITNESS 1: DERRICK JACKSON The first witness took the stand in Karmelo Anthony’s new trial hearing, and his testimony went directly to one of the defense’s biggest arguments: how much of the original trial was kept from the public and media, and WHY. Derrick Jackson, a former Collin County public information officer who said he was involved in trial preparation before being terminated in May 2026, testified that the original plan included an overflow courtroom. According to Jackson, cameras and audio equipment were tested to make sure everything worked, but the judge later decided the overflow room would NOT be used, and Jackson said he wasn’t given a real explanation for why. He also testified that the defense attorneys were not involved in the meetings he attended concerning those preparations. Jackson then described what happened after he provided a member of the media with the trial schedule before the trial began. Jackson said he had been told the schedule was covered by the gag order, but he believed releasing it was permitted. According to his testimony, a prosecutor left him an angry voicemail saying the information wasn’t public yet and telling him he was about to be suspended. Jackson said he was then called into Judge John Roach’s chambers, where the judge reprimanded him for approximately six minutes and warned that he could be held in contempt and face up to six months in jail. Jackson was later terminated. The defense then introduced the gag order itself, pointing to language they say permitted procedural announcements and information about hearings—supporting Jackson’s testimony that he believed releasing the schedule was allowed. On cross-examination, prosecutors shifted the focus to SECURITY. Jackson was asked whether he’d ever seen a threatening environment surrounding a case like this before, and he said NO. He acknowledged the importance of vetting media requests and said there were some bad actors attempting to disrupt the proceedings. Jackson said he wasn’t personally threatened, although his name had appeared on social media, and he was aware that threats had allegedly been made against other people connected to the case. Then the defense came back to a question that gets directly to the prosecution’s explanation for the restrictions: If the threats surrounding this case were serious enough to justify locking down access to the trial and limiting information surrounding pretrial proceedings, why were there apparently no arrests connected to those alleged threats? #KarmeloAnthony #KarmeloAnthonyTrial #austinmetcalf #derrickjackson #frisco
