just hit me - he always equates her being “better” to things that are related to taking care of the kids (making them lunch, making the snowman etc) - he can’t explain anything that has to do with her mood or her feelings

I think the reason she was constantly sending pictures was because she wanted him to care, wanted him to be involved with the kids, and feel like he was interested/loved them.
