🚨 CHILD-CARE OWNERS: We need to talk about when reporting systems are weaponized. Child-care licensing exists for an important reason: to protect children. If a child is being abused, neglected, improperly supervised, or placed in danger, REPORT IT. But that’s very different from using licensing as a weapon because you’re angry with an owner. Let’s talk about toxic workplace behavior that doesn’t get discussed enough: A disgruntled teacher or director gets upset with an owner and suddenly starts encouraging parents to make complaints. A director organizes a staff walkout and involves families in an internal employment dispute. Employees begin sharing confidential business or personnel matters with parents to turn families against ownership. Or someone discusses a child’s diagnosis, behavior, or private information with other parents—sometimes specifically to upset them or encourage them to complain. That’s not advocacy. That’s potentially putting children, families, employees, and an entire program in the middle of a workplace conflict. And owners need accountability too. If an owner is violating regulations or putting children at risk, employees should absolutely report it. But there is a difference between reporting a genuine safety concern and retaliating against someone through the regulatory system. Licensing agencies also have a responsibility to investigate objectively and determine what actually happened—not assume every allegation is automatically true simply because a complaint was made. And directors: leadership comes with access to sensitive information. A child’s diagnosis, a family’s circumstances, personnel matters, and internal business information should never become ammunition in your disagreement with an owner. I’ve spent decades in child care, and I believe we need to talk about ALL sides of this industry—not just the comfortable ones. Protect children. Protect confidentiality. Report legitimate concerns. But don’t weaponize systems designed to keep children safe. Have you ever seen a child-care licensing complaint used as retaliation? Let’s talk about it. #ChildCare #Daycare #ChildCareDirector #ChildCareOwner #EarlyChildhoodEducation
