#historytok #humanity #hopecore #politics Angela Davis, a militant in the American Civil Rights Movement and a member of the Black Panther Party, she was prosecuted following the attempted prison break of three prisoners (George Jackson, Fleeta Drumgo, and John Cluchette), which resulted in the death of a California judge after he was taken hostage in August 1970. The judge was murdered with one of the rifles she had purchased two days earlier. Imprisoned for twenty-two months in New York and then in California, she was eventually acquitted and pursued an academic career that led her to become director of the Department of Feminist Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her areas of interest include feminist philosophy, particularly Black feminism, African American studies, critical theory, Marxism, and the prison system. In 1998, she came out as a lesbian. During the Cold War, she visited the Soviet Union and East Germany several times, expressing on these occasions her support and sympathy for their communist model, the October Revolution, and Lenin, notably accepting the Lenin Peace Prize in 1979. She was twice, in 1980 and 1984, the Communist Party of America's candidate for Vice President of the United States, running alongside Gus Hall. Subsequently, she was active in the Occupy movement and the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign
