There’s a debate about whether Invest Fest is a “Black thing.” I’m actually okay with them saying it isn’t. My concern goes deeper. Black people already live in a world where there are countless rooms we aren’t invited into, stages we aren’t given, networks we struggle to access, and opportunities where we must fight twice as hard just to be seen. So when we finally build something powerful, I’m cautious about immediately surrendering the limited space we created. Because reciprocity matters. If other groups enthusiastically enter our spaces, take our stages, access our audiences, and benefit from what we built—but rarely open their own doors for us—that isn’t true inclusion. Eventually, it can start looking like economic and cultural colonization. That’s why I work so hard to give Black people stages at the All Black National Convention. It’s not because I dislike anybody. It’s because I know talented Black thinkers, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders are routinely overlooked elsewhere. Sometimes creating our own table isn’t exclusion. It’s survival, opportunity, ownership, and self-determination.
