@tootall2function: Taking care of seniors with memory issues is something you will not know how hard it is until you have to do it yourself. Everyone wants me to take a step back, however, if I can’t take care of him, no one will, and he will suffer and so will his cats. I will gladly step back when I have some in-home care in place but for now what else can I do? I can’t leave someone who can’t even prepare his own meals. I’ll clean up a bathroom mess himself. Please don’t be quick to judge my decisions until you have experienced this. When the time comes, I will make the best decision for him. #stroke #seniorcare #memoryloss #dementia #volunteer
Caitlin, I was a care taker for 7 years. Different type of disabilities (autism usually), but at ANY time that a lien was crossed, wether it be verbally, physically, or just made something uncomfortable (for example they getting an erec**on showering (nothing to do with the staff, as this individual did not even have that kind of mental capacity) we would step away. You can address- “im just gonna give you some private time, I’ll be back in a few”. It’s not okay to be uncomfortable as a care taker regardless of your promises you feel you made. You NEED to have boundaries and being a creep regardless of disabilities does not make things any more okay.

Sweetheart everybody has all the answers until they get in your shoes. You do what you feel safe doing and what you feel you need to. I just want you to be safe. You are so amazing for everything you have done. I know somewhere inside he’s still in there and he appreciates you

hey hey. RN here, and I've been following from the start. while it COULD be from the stroke or COULD be from a potential UTI (I know your concerns with this), it could also be from restarting meds. it might be a good idea to review those meds and potential side effects or interactions. Let me know if you want help looking them over. 🩷

Have you spoken with someone at your local Legion Hall or VFW? They might have a volunteer or two who would be willing to help.

I know you’re so frustrated but please know that the majority of those comments you’re getting about stepping back and getting help are coming out of concern for YOU. but you’re right that most of us don’t understand how difficult it is to find help with limited funds

As someone who has worked with dementia patient’s, it’s not forgetting. How it was explained to me is that it’s more of unsafe decision making and their compensation with consequences is less active.

Can you take him to a senior center to play games and make friends with others his age? Take some of the focus off you? Just a thought. Have not been in your shoes, so not sure if would work.

Hey, I’ve got a question for you. Is he only like that when it’s just the two of you? If there’s somebody else there, does he keep all that and check? If having another person there makes him behave more appropriately than maybe you should always have somebody over there with you when you go. Just a thought. I know this has gotta be heart wrenching for you after everything you’ve put into him and he’s finally got most of his things straightened out because of you and now you’re having such a hard time. I’m so sorry.

Your doing amazing with your elderly friend. No one understands unless they are walking your path. His past traumas from being abandoned will be 10x worse if you do the same as everyone else in his past has. Its hard to get through these moments with him....but your the one standing by him. Keep it up girl! Your amazing and we need more people like you in this world!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

In FL hospice (NOT end of life) for indigent provides more care than regular home health and there are ways to qualify. They send aides and nurses

since they didn't give him anything for potential UTI, try D-mannose. it may help with the bacteria that was found. hope he improves.

I was a Carer for 6 years, often had comments from males I would care for, it's tricky because you are providing the most personal of care and sometimes that can be confusing for the elderly male, I found it really useful to wear a professional nurse type tunic, it signals to the gent I am there to provide clinical support and can help with boundaries, you are doing a great job looking after this gentleman, it's not easy work fiscally and emotionally

I can attest to strokes completely changing people! My own Great Grandma post stroke tried to come at me physically.. told me I deserved all the abuse I got as a child and that she hated me. We'd never had a single issue prior. It's heartbreaking to watch and live. Sending you strength and love! ❤️

Idk if it’s every state but where I live elderly can do a reverse mortgage and if there’s equity they basically get it in small amounts each month to help supplement income. If he has equity in his home could help him afford care. Here’s also hoping these views help too.

When I worked in assisted living there was a man who had a stroke that he changed the same way. We weren’t allowed to take him his meds alone. I’m am just so sad and sorry this happened. Had so much hope for him to be at peace for rest of his days. I’m broken hearted for him and you as well.

You are doing great. Yes, I think it might be the stroke but always make sure you are in contact with his doctor. Getting home health can be a huge battle. Keep the battle, we got you. God Bless.

If your height listed on your name is correct, that is a huge benefit to your ability to keep him in check. I'm 5'1" and I would be afraid he or any man could easily over power me if they chose. ❤️You are an amazing lady with a heart of gold. ❤️

If a nursing home did that when residence hit on staff then so many wouldn't be able to be bathed. I got to spend 6 months getting PT in a nursing home facility that has a section for short term rehab. The amount of times I heard the elderly ladies and get to make comments was outrageous. You are doing great. What isn't seen is he is struggling with the changes too.
