The Commewijne River east of Paramaribo passes through former Dutch plantation estates whose ruins are being reclaimed by jungle — the rusted machinery of 18th century sugar processing sits alongside restored plantation houses, creating an unplanned open-air museum of colonial agricultural history. Peperpot Nature Park is a former coffee and cacao plantation directly outside Paramaribo whose abandonment in the 1960s allowed secondary forest to regenerate — it now has over 200 bird species including several found nowhere else in the world, accessible by a 30-minute drive from the capital. Raleighvallen is a remote rainforest area accessible only by small aircraft or multi-day river journey where the Coppename River creates a series of rapids around islands used by scarlet macaws as communal roost sites — the birds gather in numbers so large the trees appear red at dusk.
