This is your reminder that rabbit breeding can be hard, it’s not always what you see online. Since the first week of our Mini Plush Lops' life, one of them, Biscotti, hasn’t been growing as quickly as we’d like, only half the size of the others. I did begin to bottle feed her, and she has been getting food from me 1-2 times every day. We weren’t sure if she was going to make it, but she’s been catching up, that is until the last few days, in which she was maintaining weight, but not gaining any. She was still full of energy, but not getting any bigger. Fast forward to last night, and we let all four of the MPL babies out. Everyone was doing amazing, running in circles, and binkying, especially Biscotti. We were reassured that maybe she would make it. This morning, we decided to let the babies out again, and made an awful discovery. Our little blue WE, Muffin, had passed. The night before nothing was wrong when they were out, and nothing wrong later in the night either. The last time I saw her, she was flopped down on the nest box, like she normally was. She had no signs of illness, no diet changes, and they were indoors. Nothing about her made me think “sick rabbit.” Losing a baby so suddenly is one of the hardest parts of breeding. Sometimes, despite everything you do, there isn't a warning, and there isn't always something you could have done differently. We can do everything right and still lose them, and that's something that never gets easier. As for Biscotti, we're continuing to give her extra care and keeping a very close eye on her. We don't know what the future holds for her, but we're going to give her every chance we can. Breeding rabbits isn't all fun. It isn't always easy. It isn't just cute babies, watching them grow, and getting to send them off to loving homes. Sometimes babies don't make it. Sometimes you have to supplement-feed a struggling kit. Sometimes a pregnancy doesn't take, a doe loses a litter, a baby is born with a problem, or you have to make difficult decisions about a rabbit's health. Sometimes you can do everything right and still lose one. If you can't handle the possibility of babies passing, difficult births, failed pregnancies, sick or struggling kits, unexpected veterinary bills, sleepless nights, heartbreak, and the responsibility that comes with bringing new lives into the world, rabbit breeding may not be for you. Breeding should never be about simply producing babies. It comes with responsibility, uncertainty, and sometimes loss. You have to be prepared for the hard parts just as much as the beautiful ones. 🤍 All of this said, we will be postponing reservations for the two seemingly healthy Mini Plush Lop babies. We want to take the extra time to monitor them closely and make sure that whatever happened to Muffin does not happen to them. Their health and well-being will always come before getting them into their new homes, and we would rather be overly cautious than risk sending a baby home before we know they are truly ready. For every successful litter, there are moments that remind us just how fragile these little lives are. 🤍 #sad #bunnies #miniplushlop #rabbitbreeder #babybunnies
