this took too long to make || I Used “🇪🇺” to represent the west || The decolonization of Africa was one of the greatest anti-colonial struggles in modern history. For centuries, European imperialist powers exploited the African continent, seized its land and natural resources, imposed forced labor, destroyed existing political structures, and subjected millions of people to racism and colonial violence. The so-called civilizing mission was nothing more than an ideological justification for exploitation and domination. African independence was not a gift generously granted by European governments, but a victory won through the resistance, sacrifice, and struggle of African peoples. From Algeria to Angola, from Guinea-Bissau to Mozambique, liberation movements fought against colonial armies and the economic systems that kept their populations oppressed. Leaders such as Amílcar Cabral, Patrice Lumumba, Samora Machel, and Thomas Sankara recognized that genuine liberation required more than replacing a European flag with an African one. Political independence without economic independence could leave former colonies trapped in neocolonialism, with foreign corporations, imperialist powers, and international financial institutions continuing to control their resources and development. The struggles in Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and Zimbabwe demonstrated that colonial rule could be challenged and defeated through organized resistance, mass mobilization, and armed liberation struggles. Yet the end of formal colonialism did not mean the end of imperialist exploitation. Foreign intervention, economic dependency, unequal trade relations, and support for authoritarian regimes continued to undermine African sovereignty. The assassination of Patrice Lumumba in 1961 and the destabilization of revolutionary governments revealed how far imperialist powers were willing to go to protect their strategic and economic interests. Nevertheless, the African liberation movements fundamentally changed world history by helping destroy the legitimacy of colonial rule and inspiring oppressed peoples across the globe. Decolonization must therefore be understood not as a peaceful European act of generosity, but as a historic struggle against imperialism, racism, and exploitation. The right of African peoples to determine their own future, control their natural resources, and build societies free from foreign domination remains unfinished. True decolonization means not only the end of colonial flags and administrations, but also the end of the economic and political structures that continue to reproduce imperialist dependency. Africa’s liberation was achieved through the struggle of its own peoples, and its full realization requires the defense of their sovereignty, dignity, and right to determine their own future. #africa #decolonization #colonialism #europe #panafricanism
