In 1994, President Isaias Afwerki revoked the citizenship of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Eritrea due to their refusal to participate in the 1993 independence referendum and their conscientious objection to military service. Since then, the government has imprisoned, tortured, and harassed Witnesses, including women, the elderly, and even minors, without criminal trials. Currently, 64 of Jehovah’s Witnesses are in prison. None of them have been charged or sentenced.
