Who climbed stairwells with sixty, eighty, a hundred pounds of gear on their backs, past a river of people going the other way, because somewhere above them people needed a way out. They didn't get a countdown. They didn't get a warning long enough to matter. They just kept climbing until the building made the decision for them. 343 empty seats at kitchen tables. 343 uniforms hanging in closets that never got worn again. 343 sets of turnout gear with names still stitched into the collar. Some of them had been on the job thirty years. Some were still probationary firefighters, months into the career they'd wanted their whole lives. It didn't matter what rank they held or how long they'd worn the patch. When the call came in, they all answered it the same way — by going in. That's the whole story, really. The most selfless act ever.... giving their lives in the act of helping others... these people exemplify real Americans... Our society today could learn a thing or two from these guys... because it seems like many have forgotten...

Not gonna lie :

My wife and I have been in the fire service for 40 years. Our daughter was actually born that exact day. The emotional roller coaster that happened on that day is off the charts. Unlike the city of New York, I will really never forget.
