Who climbed stairwells with sixty, eighty, a hundred pounds of gear on their backs, past a river of people going the other way, because somewhere above them people needed a way out. They didn't get a countdown. They didn't get a warning long enough to matter. They just kept climbing until the building made the decision for them. 343 empty seats at kitchen tables. 343 uniforms hanging in closets that never got worn again. 343 sets of turnout gear with names still stitched into the collar. Some of them had been on the job thirty years. Some were still probationary firefighters, months into the career they'd wanted their whole lives.
