A widow found out the war that killed her husband doesn't legally count as one. Now, she has to fight a system that denied her benefits. On March 12th, Major Alex Klinner was one of six Air Force service members killed when their refueling plane went down over Iraq. He was supporting an active U.S. war against Iran, a war that started in late February and just passed the six-month mark, with 18 U.S. soldiers dead and nearly 800 wounded. He left behind his wife, Libby, a toddler, and seven-month-old twins. Libby’s casualty assistance officer told her that because Congress never formally declared war on Iran, her family doesn't qualify for hostile fire pay or the combat zone tax exclusion, which are the benefits every family of a service member killed in combat is supposed to get. But this is not actually how this has worked historically. Presidents have designated combat zones by executive order for wars Congress never formally declared, such as, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Afghanistan. So the rule being applied to a grieving widow isn't some ancient, unbreakable law of the universe. It's a choice somebody is currently making. It took Libby going viral for anyone to act on it. Only after her post did the Air Force's director of mortuary affairs reach out to open an audit. It got big enough that the Vice President addressed it at a White House briefing. He said all the things you'd expect, grateful for the sacrifice, committed to making it right… but he still wouldn't use the word

His boss has also been downplaying our involvement in Iran recently. While Trump has called it a “war” in passing, just a few days ago, he called it “small potatoes” and “not a big thing” for us. Sure, tell that to Libby and the other 17 families who are grieving their loved ones’ passing due to some “small potatoes.” I’m sure they’d love that. The book of James ties real religion directly to how you treat widows and orphans in crisis. Is it Christlike for the “most Christian administration in history” to deny a widow death benefits when her husband is killed? And here's the part that should bother you the most: this got fixed because a woman with a big enough following made noise, not because our military voluntarily gave her the benefits she was entitled to. So what happens to the other 17 families in this same war who don't go viral? What happens if someone else dies?
