Overseas-born workers fill critical labour shortages - working in aged care and childcare construction and agriculture, tech, hospitality and small business. Around 30% of Australia’s doctors qualified overseas, and in 2023–24 alone, almost 17,000 internationally qualified nurses registered to practise here. Today I asked the Treasurer what modelling the Albanese Government has done on the economic consequences of significantly cutting migration. Of course Australia needs an honest debate about sustainable migration levels, housing and infrastructure. But politicians who blame migrants for decades of poor planning and housing policy are looking for a scapegoat, not a solution. If politicians call for dramatic cuts to skilled migration and working holiday makers, they should be honest about the consequences: which workers will we lose, which essential services will be stretched further, and what will it cost our economy?

Population has grown by 2.5 million since last census in 2021, we don’t manufacture anything here anymore, so where did all these jobs we need them for come from? Creating a problem while claiming to bring in a solution. It’s like your local council spending up big at the end of a financial year to get a bigger budget for the next year.
