@nourishingapothecary: Waking at 2 or 3am and struggling to get back to sleep? There’s a difference between struggling to fall asleep and waking during the night and feeling suddenly wide awake. Before reaching for a supplement, I want to understand why the waking is happening in the first place. Stress, hormonal changes, alcohol, blood sugar regulation, medications, sleep disorders and other factors can all contribute to disrupted sleep. But one supplement I often consider for people who struggle to switch their brain back off is L theanine. L theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea. Research suggests it can influence brain activity associated with a more relaxed state, including increasing alpha wave activity, without acting like a traditional sedative. That’s why I sometimes use it alongside magnesium as part of a broader sleep plan. And this is important: waking at 2 or 3am is not automatically an “adrenal” or “liver” problem. Persistent night waking deserves a proper look at what is driving it rather than treating the time on the clock as a diagnosis. The Brand I recommend is Herbs of Gold. My husband only sleeps 3-4 hours every single night. He says he feels like he’s dying after 10+ years of sleep deprivation, he’s so exhausted all the time but he just can’t stay asleep. He takes magnesium glycinate and L-theanine, but it makes no difference for him.
