@driphistorian: THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII Catherine of Aragon (1485–1536) was Queen of England from 1509 to 1533 as the first wife of Henry VIII. Daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, she previously married Henry’s elder brother, Arthur. In 1513, she served as Regent during Henry's French campaign, overseeing domestic defence during the English victory over Scotland at Flodden. When Henry sought an annulment, Catherine refused, defending her marriage and daughter Mary's legitimacy, prompting the English break with Rome. Declared invalid in 1533, she was banished, living at Kimbolton Castle until her death. Anne Boleyn (c. 150?–1536) was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of Henry VIII. Educated in France, she insisted on marriage rather than mistress status, accelerating Henry’s break with Rome. A patron of religious reform, she gave birth to the future Elizabeth I in 1533. Failing to produce a surviving male heir and entering conflict with Thomas Cromwell, her position collapsed. Convicted on charges of treason, adultery, and incest, she was executed at the Tower of London in May 1536. Jane Seymour (c. 1508–1537) was Queen of England from 1536 to 1537 as the third wife of Henry VIII. Married eleven days after Anne Boleyn's execution, she helped reconcile Henry with his daughter Mary and focused on traditional queenly duties. In October 1537, she gave birth to the future Edward VI, Henry’s long-sought legitimate male heir. She died twelve days later from postnatal infection, remaining the only wife to receive a queen’s state funeral and burial beside Henry at Windsor. Anne of Cleves (1515–1557) was Queen of England for six months in 1540 as the fourth wife of Henry VIII. Selected by Thomas Cromwell for a Protestant alliance, the match faced immediate royal dissatisfaction. When Henry met her in disguise at Rochester, Anne failed to recognise him, wounding his pride; Henry subsequently cited Hans Holbein's portrait as a pretext to excuse his reaction. Anne pragmatically agreed to an annulment on grounds of non-consummation. Rewarded with manors, Hever Castle, and the status "The King's Beloved Sister," she lived independently in England, outliving Henry and his other consorts. Catherine Howard (c. 1523–1542) was Queen of England from 1540 to 1541 as the fifth wife of Henry VIII. Raised in the household of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, she experienced early physical exploitation by older men, including Henry Manox and Francis Dereham. Married to Henry in July 1540, her family used the match to advance conservative interests. Uncovered premarital relations and an alleged affair with Thomas Culpeper led to her conviction for treason under attainder. She was executed at the Tower of London in February 1542. Catherine Parr (c. 1512–1548) was Queen of England and Ireland from 1543 to 1547 as the sixth wife of Henry VIII. A humanist scholar, she became the first English woman to publish under her own name (Prayers or Meditations, 1545). She advocated for the Third Succession Act, restoring Mary and Elizabeth to succession, and served as Regent in 1544. Averting an arrest warrant for heresy by submitting to Henry's authority, she outlived the king, married Thomas Seymour, and died in 1548 following childbirth. #thetudors #henryviiiwives #tudor #britishhistory #tudors
