Athena, the great horned owl at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, has officially welcomed her first owlet. The eggs were laid a few days apart in early March, so now we’re watching closely as we wait for egg number two to hatch. In these early days, Athena will stay close, brooding the owlet to keep it warm and protected. Great horned owl parents are attentive feeders. You may spot Athena (and her mate) bringing in prey like rodents and small mammals, which she’ll tear into small pieces for the chick. Over the next few weeks, the owlet will grow quickly, trading its soft down for thicker feathers. Around 4–6 weeks, it may begin “branching,” climbing out of the nest onto nearby limbs as it builds strength and coordination. Fledging, those first short flights, typically happens around 6–7 weeks. Even after that, the young owl will stay nearby while continuing to learn survival skills and rely on its parents for food.
