I don’t understand how so many people can afford $2M houses. I make pretty damn good money and feel house poor with my 800k house

So, what you’re saying is, a lot of people are have +$2 million dollars. Competitively. Think about that.

This is true for almost all major northeastern cities (except maybe Philly) so Boston, nyc, dc

No to be to much of a boomer but if your a normal young family you really shouldn’t be looking for a “nice house” the 1,500 sq foot, 3 bed two bath, built in 1962 will work just fine. Granted that house is still too expensive but it’ll be more affordable.

In LA the difference between a $1million house and a $2million house is massive.

If you have to earn 400-500k+ just to afford a very outdated average sized house that is 1hr or even more away from the city really what is the point of living in this area?? Earn a top1% income just to live a middle class lifestyle - why not change areas given the state of the housing market. Genuinely curious

Correct, and there’s this really odd scale that happens where a house that’s $500,000-$1 million is kind of the same thing, you don’t get much more. $1,000,000 to $1.5M you get slightly nicer, but it’s just simply not that much better… and then something magical happens at $1.9-$2.0 million mark; the quality difference becomes noticeable and the architecture shifts dramatically toward class and taste instead of a big cardboard box on some land.

Right? When people are saying a really nice home is 500k?! I don’t think those even exist in my town and we are not the richest town in the area. Tear downs start at around 700k. We are hoping to upgrade in the future with a budget of probably 1.3-1.5 (at the most) and I’m terrified we will only find a dump!

In LA where I live a 2 million is a starter home that needs a lot of work. Ridiculous

Don’t forget, you don’t ever really own the house even after it’s paid off. Don’t believe me? Try not paying property taxes for 6 months

Live in Greenwich, can confirm that’s the entry point for a nice home. Anything near $1.5 is a complete gut/tear down.

We went for the “worst house in the best neighborhood” route and it cost us 1.5M in Kansas City. I hope we don’t have to move for decades, the market is a nightmare.
