As a Doctor of Physical Therapy working in home health, I’ve heard many patients admit that they regretted having knee replacement surgery at some point during recovery. That feeling often shows up during the first few weeks, when the pain is high, sleep is difficult, the knee is swollen, and even simple tasks require help. During that stage, it can be hard to imagine reaching the other side. But regret during a difficult moment does not necessarily mean you made the wrong decision. I’ve watched patients go from wondering why they ever agreed to surgery to walking farther, returning to activities they had given up, and living with much less pain. Their perspective often changes as healing continues and they begin noticing improvements in everyday life. That doesn’t mean every recovery is easy or that everyone gets the exact outcome they hoped for. Knee replacement is a major surgery, and progress can be slower and less predictable than people expect. One of the most important things to remember is not to judge the entire outcome while you’re still in the hardest part of recovery. A bad week is not the same as a bad result. Look for the small improvements. Maybe you’re getting out of the chair more easily, walking a little farther, sleeping for longer stretches, or relying less on your walker. Progress is often happening before it feels dramatic. If you’re preparing for surgery or currently recovering and would like a more structured roadmap, I put together my Total Knee Replacement Recovery eGuide based on what I’ve learned helping patients recover at home. You can find it at thehappymanner.com/tkr. This content is for general education only and is not individualized medical advice. Every recovery journey is unique. Always follow the recommendations of your surgeon and rehabilitation team. Did you ever regret having your knee replacement, and did that feeling change as your recovery continued? #AskTikTok #TikTokDoYourMagic
