@nssastronomy2: Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star in the constellation Orion, located about 550 light-years from Earth and nearing the end of its life. In the future, it will end its life in a supernova explosion when its core collapses. The explosion will release an enormous amount of energy, ejecting the star’s outer layers into space at tremendous speeds and creating an expanding supernova remnant. From Earth, Betelgeuse could become far brighter than Jupiter and one of the brightest objects in the night sky, potentially even visible during the daytime. To clear up misconceptions betelgeuse is around 624 light years away so if it has gone supernova it will not take millions of years for us to see it if it were to go supernova right now it would be around 624 years for us to see it however it’s estimated at the end of its lifespan so that still is a few million years it’s very likely it will go supernova in a few million years but there’s always hope
