@kodekloud: Crossplane vs Terraform Explained With One Example! Terraform is an infrastructure as code tool. You write a config, run it, and Terraform creates your resource on AWS, then records what it built in a state file. It only does something when a human runs it, so if someone changes that resource by hand later, Terraform never knows. Crossplane works differently. It runs inside your Kubernetes cluster, so you declare what you want in a YAML file and apply it with kubectl. Crossplane creates the resource and then keeps checking, every minute or so, that the real thing still matches what you declared. Turn off a setting by hand and Crossplane puts it back. Been there, used both. From a user perspective: terraform errors are easy to understand and debug. Crossplane errors are sometimes passed to the crd and sometimes there's just an error line on the controller and you don't have any idea why the change on the db.yaml didn't change your db as expected. If you are using hashicorp terraform cloud you also have the "drift" feature that does what xplane does

more importantly, crossplane can be triggered by changes in the infra, original yaml or state of the resource. so if you deploy a large env you don't need lambdas at all

These are 2 diffrent scenarios, like mutable and immutable resources. You will pay Crossplane queries, while Terraform creates ones and never payed again. I use AWS CloudFormation just to create resources, put alarms on any critical props changes, like backup switch off, and act or pay only if alarm is triggered, and not pay continously becoz scared that someone turns backups off….

so instead of saving the state file in the developers hands (dev has to setup an s3 backend) we're gonna save that same state file in the cluster.......... not sure how this improvement is more than marginal

Or just use cdk, which will tell you when drift has happened. If you don't want someone messing with certain things, don't give them permissions.
