When I decided to wear a burkini for Miss Universe, Joshuadesigns was absolutely amazing. He tailored the swim suits to perfectly match how much we wanted to show to feel confident and beautiful, without compromising comfort or Culture. I could’ve worn a bikini with a skirt, or even a burkini with shorts—things I’m totally comfortable in. But this wasn’t just about me. I was representing Eritrean girls who might not feel comfortable stepping out like that, because it’s not common in our culture. Yet, they still feel the pressure to wear bikinis to prove they can do what other girls do. You walk best in shoes that fit you! Confidence comes from wearing what makes you feel like YOU! Little girl who aspires to do pageants and Modeling one day, Don’t wear something that makes you scrunch up to hide, just to meet an industry’s standards and still end up feeling out of place. Wear what makes you feel strongest, weather it’s a bikini or a Burkini. I chose this look because, in Joshua’s words, I looked like Wonder Woman and felt like her too. I wanted people to focus on the vision and purpose behind my presence, not just the parts a bikini tends to highlight.
