@atlasberry008: Heart Aerospace flew the X1 for 27 minutes this week. 25,000 pounds, 106-foot wingspan, over a megawatt of power. The largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. The electricity cost about $5. Here's the honest part though. That flight was pure battery, but the aircraft they're actually selling — the ES-30 — is a hybrid. Batteries alone get you 125 miles. You need the generator to reach 500. So they didn't prove batteries can fly the commercial mission. They proved batteries can lift the airplane. That was the part everyone said was impossible. That demonstrator will never be practical as flown because it’s 25k lbs EMPTY. Imagine head wind full passenger flight you’re down to 10 minutes add margin and even less. Has to be hybrid with much smaller battery

A jet that uses 1,000 gallons per hour for flight uses a similar amount in the first 15 minutes to take off and get to cruising level. If you just used the batteries for take off (with less pollution at the airport city and subsidies from the local air district), their is a case to be made for this tech.
