SPOILER ALERT for anyone who wants to know: there are two novels for love unseen beneath the clear night sky, and this first season will adopt the first novel. yes the ending isn’t completely happy, nor is it completely sad, it’s bittersweet. koharu is faking her memory loss here in this episode, and that’s because she has gotten an update on her condition. her new prognosis is that there’s a very low chance that she will live another year, because of that, she decides to fake her memory loss to distance herself from kakeru because she doesn’t want to hurt him when she dies. kakaru however doesn’t abandon her, he stays by her side and they even go to the fireworks display together as that’s one of koharu’s dreams written on her bookmark. the end of the first volume tricks the reader into thinking that koharu died shortly after the fireworks display, but in the volume 1 epilogue, it is revealed she actually beats her original one year prognosis but it also fast towards to her death at age 45. but, it isn’t all sad because it is revealed that she accomplishes the goals she had on her bookmark, she gets go to the fireworks display, gets married to kakeru, they have a daughter together, they even raise her together. after all of this is when koharu finally dies after a battle with breast cancer at the age of 45. but it is also revealed that about a decade after koharu’s death, kakeru is also diagnosed with cancer and he wants to give up on his treatment, but he finds a recording left by koharu that motivates him to keep fighting. volume 2 fills in the gaps between the firework display and the fast forwarding to koharu’s death, like their wedding, the birth of their daughter, and other stuff. volume 2 is told from koharu’s perspective. so yes the ending isn’t a fairy tale happy ending but it isn’t that sad either, they both overcame so much together and koharu got to accomplish all of her dreams together and die at peace, at the end of her life she reflects on everything and how she is happy kakeru chose her.
