i like to imagine that the gems had "real forms". since they are metamorphic aliens made of rock and light, i hc that in the homeworld, their bodies plan were way more diferente from the humans: non humanoid beings. for beings who previously didn't know humans, their bodies were way too similar to ours, Besides, our anatomy isn't that great and is still very specific. As inorganic beings, they do not undergo the process of evolution, and their bodies are merely projections of light from their stones, so they can change shape rapidly without going through the evolutionary process and without consuming way too much energy. My conclusion is that the anatomy of gems on Homeworld must be perfectly shaped to fill their niches in gem society, with characteristics quite distinct from humans, meticulously adapted to their functions, since they are not organic organisms and can be, at least physically, perfect. Example: Peridots with multiple eyes and fingers to efficiently manipulate and observe screens and buttons.
