@blitzphd: This has been on my to do list for a while - it turns out, the math behind CT scanners is fairly simple to understand but complicated to implement. #math #radon #ctscan #explained

Do PET scans next. I know they involve antimatter, but not how or where in the process.

🤔So... WHY are CT scans used and not MRI? Why subject patiento that much radiation when MRI's apparently do the same thing with much safer magnetic power?!?🤷‍♂️

Medical physicist here - solid explanation! Interestingly, back projection is also how Lauterbur demonstrated MRI in his first Nature paper.

They do need to improve their consultations before a CT scan because they can involve a lot of radiation into a person.

I have been a CT tech for 10 years. It still baffles me the science behind it. CT and MRI are magic 🪄

Omfg I've always thought that reconstructing the 3d structure from 2d data over a full rotation should be possible, and I've tried to figure out the math a couple of times as a hobby without knowing that it was done ages ago. Research never showed a solution for me, because I was looking in the wrong place: game engine algorithms ahahaha

skipped the part where EMI owned the record label that represented the Beatles and while trying to reduce their tax they invested in other arms of their company. They had an electrical engineer named Hounsfield who was trying to make a cross-sectional x-ray technique, so they put some funds towards his research and wrote it off their tax. little did they know it would result in one of the most important technologies in medical imaging.

When i was a kid my first ‘job’ was calculating tissue to air ratios for cancer patients from little dosimeters stuck on them. Long sheets of paper. Unreally primitive before computers.

the hospitals sometimes really dont like to do CT scans bc of images construction unfortunately. Experienced it with my grandma that had multiple cracks in one of the bones that were invisible in regular xray, got sent home from one ER and almost sent home in another
