do you know why ? exposing your vitals to someone you know . head down covers vitals but still respect. exaggerated nod up or head held high exposed jugular shows dominant, your not a threat to me . like open hand is non threatening, closed hand or hidden hand triggers a warning women often cover their midsection , protecting there vitals . its actually heavily studied its a primal language of survival

My best guess is that the down nod comes from Japan when people would salute each other, simply modified to what we do nowadays. The upward nod comes from a natural reaction or excitement to see someone you know you see this person you get excited and you raise your head to to show them that you recognize them.
