@datandmaps: These are salt evaporation ponds in San Francisco Bay. Water is moved into shallow ponds and left to evaporate, concentrating salt until it can eventually be harvested. As salinity changes, different algae and microorganisms thrive, shifting the ponds through shades of green, orange, red and even pink! But the colors also tell a much bigger land-use story. Over the past century, more than 80% of San Francisco Bay’s wetlands were filled, developed or diked off, including land converted for salt production. Now some of that history is running in reverse. A massive restoration effort is converting roughly 15,100 acres of former industrial salt ponds back into tidal wetlands and other habitat, helping build resilience to storms and flooding.
