Why are some acne marks red and some brown? Because they are two different leftovers. Red, pink or purple marks are post-inflammatory erythema, which is a blood vessel story: the capillaries that dilated during the breakout never fully retracted, so the spot stays flushed. Brown or gray marks are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is a pigment story: the inflammation pushed your pigment cells to overproduce, and that melanin sits in the upper layers of skin long after the pimple is gone. There is a free five-second test. Press a clean glass slide or the flat side of a clear phone case against the mark and look through it: if the color blanches and disappears under pressure, it is the blood vessel kind, because vessels empty under pressure and melanin does not. If it stays put, it is pigment. This matters because most dark spot products on your shelf were built for the pigment kind, so if your mark is actually red you can use them for a year and see almost nothing change. For red marks, azelaic acid and niacinamide may help, and pulsed dye laser is the fastest professional option. For brown marks, vitamin C, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, niacinamide and retinoids are the usual workhorses. Azelaic acid is the one that works on both mechanisms at once. Broad-spectrum SPF every morning matters either way, since UV deepens visible redness and restimulates pigment, and a tinted one adds visible-light cover. Set expectations in months, not weeks: red typically fades in 3 to 12 months, brown in 6 to 18, usually longer on deeper skin tones. Patch test any new active and give it time, and if you want to know whether a mark is actually fading, the Skin Bliss AI photo comparison beats checking the mirror every morning. https://skinbliss.app/r/red-vs-brown-marks #pievspih #postacnemarks #darkspots #azelaicacid #skincaretips #skincareroutine
