I just cannot get past the way the whole thing looks so historically inaccurate— the Odyssey is set in the Bronze age: we are talking turquoises and burnt reds and jade greens and bright jewel colors contrasted with marble whites, but the whole film looks like it was shot in greige. The fact the production ghosted a company dedicated to historically accurate costuming and went for a rebuild of spirit halloween basic dark ages-core schemes with stylized helms to give it the illusion of ancient Greece is something i cannot get past. The most renowned translators of the Odyssey itself have stated the adaptation is deeply unfaithful to the original text, so for Nolan to go about touting it as the most “historically accurate version of the Odyssey” is kind of like spitting in the face of all the classical scholars, researches, linguists and art historians that have deconstructed the text extensively for centuries. The resources and information was there, Nolan just actively chose to ignore it in favor of a look and narrative that fit the modern day masculinity ideal of what an Greek Epic should look like. Good acting, some cool effects, sure. But the script and overall visuals are lacking in how the film did not deliver the advertised ‘historical accuracy’ and instead showed us a modern man’s fantasy of the epic.

I’m glad you liked it. It was incredible and I didn’t even see it in IMAX. I highly enjoyed it.
