@shmkhnvva: Circassians- are one of the indigenous peoples of the Northwestern Caucasus, a nation with an ancient history, a distinct language family, and a cultural heritage that has profoundly influenced the wider region. To understand who they are is to explore a story of resilience, sophisticated stateless governance, artistic achievement, and one of the most tragic episodes of displacement in modern history. The term "Circassian" is primarily an exonym used by Russians and Europeans, derived from medieval Turkic and Persian forms like Cherkes. The people’s endonym for themselves is Adyghe (Адыгэ). This self-designation encapsulates their identity as a single ethnolinguistic group despite historical tribal divisions. They belong to the Northwest Caucasian linguistic family, a unique language group unrelated to the Indo-European or Turkic families surrounding them. Their languages—including Adyghe proper and Kabardian—are noted for their extreme phonetic complexity, featuring a very small number of core consonants but an immense variety of sounds created through complex articulation. Archaeological and genetic evidence points to the Circassians being descendants of the ancient populations of the northwestern Caucasus foothills and coast. Ancient Greek historians, including Herodotus and Strabo, mentioned tribes inhabiting this area, such as the Zikhi (Ζυγοί) and later the Kerketae (Κερκέται), names widely considered to be early references to the ancestors of the modern Adyghe. For millennia, they have been the dominant population of the historic region known as Circassia, which stretched along the northeastern Black Sea coast from modern-day Anapa in the northwest to Abkhazia in the southeast, and deep into the Kuban River plains. Social Structure: The Democratic Republic of the Nobility Perhaps the most defining feature of traditional Circassian society was its highly developed yet stateless political system. Lacking a centralized monarchy or kingdom, classical Circassian civilization functioned as a type of democratic aristocracy or a league of principalities. Society was stratified into castes: Pshi (Princes): Held military command and were nominal leaders, but their power was not absolute. Warq (Nobles): The true backbone of the social and political structure. The warq owned land, elected the princes, and served as the primary warriors. Crucially, any warq could challenge a prince's decision or even his position. Tlfokotl (Free Commoners): Farmers, herders, and artisans who were free citizens, possessed rights, and participated in community councils. Pshytl (Vassals) and Slaves: A smaller class of dependent peasants and war captives. This rigid hierarchy was balanced by a powerful code of conduct, ethics, and honor known as Adyghe Khabze. Khabze governed every aspect of life, from greeting a stranger on the road to conflict resolution and warfare. It emphasized dignity (namys), courage (lizag), hospitality, respect for elders, and moderation. Disputes between individuals or entire clans (tlapq) were settled through councils of elders (Khase), where consensus-based decisions were sought according to customary law. This intricate system allowed the Circassians to maintain a cohesive national identity and resist external empires for centuries without ever needing a king. #adyga #circassians #kabardian #elbruso #fyp #circassian #адыги #никтонезабытничтонезабыто #адыгея
