I’m a psychiatrist, and I think we sometimes prescribe too much medication. That probably sounds strange coming from someone whose entire job involves prescribing psychiatric medications. But being pro-medication doesn't mean believing that every symptom needs a pill. Sometimes medication is absolutely the right treatment. Sometimes therapy is better. Sometimes behavioral changes or addressing substance use makes more sense. Sometimes the best treatment is simply monitoring and giving someone time. And yes—sometimes doing nothing is actually doing something. The goal of psychiatry shouldn't be to prescribe the maximum number of medications. It should be to give the patient the right treatment, at the right dose, for the right reason. More medication ≠ better treatment. And fewer medications ≠ better treatment either.
