@bergpanza: A day we will never forget. ⚡️🏔️ On August 14th, we set out in the Monte Rosa massif to complete a long ridge traverse, aiming to conquer three 4,000-meter peaks in a single day: Pollux, Castor, and Felikhorn. Since no bad weather was forecasted, we started at 5:00 AM and kept a steady, relaxed pace. But on our second summit, everything changed in an instant. Suddenly, we heard a strange, loud buzzing coming from our trekking poles and ice axes. Moments later, our own gear started giving us electric shocks. We were caught in an unpredicted lightning storm at over 4,000 meters. ⚡️ We knew we had to act immediately: 🔹 Strip off ALL metal equipment as fast as possible 🔹 Find whatever minimal shelter the ridge offered 🔹 Get into our emergency bivouac bag and wait out the storm This situation was on the absolute limit of life and death and should be avoided at all costs. We were lucky to have both the knowledge and the right emergency gear in our packs to survive this. Our state of mind: A raw mix of fear, razor-sharp focus, and pure survival instinct. Stay safe out there in the mountains. The weather always has the final word. 🙏 📍 Castor Summit (4,225m), Monte Rosa Massif #alpinism #mountaineering #survival #storm #mountainsafety

Thunderstorm advice on a mountain: Don’t waste time throwing away metal gear—metal doesn’t attract lightning. Focus on getting off summits, ridgelines, and exposed high ground and descending to safer, lower terrain. Put down long metal objects like trekking poles or ice axes rather than holding them above you. Your location and exposure matter far more than the metal you’re carrying.

Neither metal nor a phone attracts lightning—these are commonly repeated myths.

Even if you throw metal away lighting can still strike you. My god I don’t even go outside in thunderstorms these men are stuck on top of a mountain

last time this happened to me i placed all the gear together on a higher place not so far from me so that it would act as a lighting rod, then climbed down a bit, slightly off so i wouldn't be on any stream path, squatted to the ground with just my rubber soles touching it and waited for it to pass
