Pilobolus has evolved an almost absurd solution to a very specific problem. It grows on herbivore dung, after its spores have passed through an animal’s digestive system. So for the cycle to continue, it needs to get eaten! But grazing animals usually avoid eating right next to dung, so the fungus needs to get its spores somewhere more appetizing. Its solution? Aim toward the light and launch the spore case away from the dung, increasing the chance that it lands on surrounding vegetation and gets eaten by another herbivore. Then the cycle can begin again.
