@thepainnpchenlow: Pain spiking to a 10/10? Do this before rushing to the emergency room 🚨 Emergency rooms are built to detect life-threatening crises like heart attacks or strokes—not to calm a hyper-sensitized nervous system in a severe chronic pain flare. In fact, the sensory overload and long wait times can push your body deeper into fight-or-flight panic. Instead of waiting for the next crisis, build a written Flare Rescue Kit with your care team: 1️⃣ Pre-approved medical protocols 2️⃣ Sensory calming tools (heat, ice, weighted blankets) 3️⃣ Nervous system down-regulation exercises 4️⃣ Clear red-flag criteria for when the ER is necessary 📌 Save this video for your next severe flare day, and share it with someone who lives with chronic pain. #ChronicPain #PainManagement #PainNP #ChronicPainRelief #PainFlare

As a nurse and someone with complex regional pain syndrome…. I’ll NEVER go to the ER. I have zero faith in their ability to treat me. Not with the state of our healthcare.

I truly believe we need urgent care based pain clinics. One you have to be referred to and meet criteria for. That is not the standard “make an appointment and wait” situation. Once an established patient, be able to do a walk-in during a flare and get the help we actually need based on a predetermined care plan on file for flares.

PAIN SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AN EMERGENCY. SOMETIMES THE RELIEF FROM PAIN MEDS CAN BE WHAT STANDS BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH. MENTALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICALLY

I do not go to the ER, they cannot relieve the pain I am in. Here in South Texas they think your after meds.

It's also that due to medical malpractice lawsuits and malpractice insurance rates, Dr's simply won't prescribe opiods because they are worried about being sued or losing their medical license and their income and ability to practice medicine. Insurance companies are the absolute bane of this country. They tell YOU, the medical doctor what to do, not the other way around.

i wish they would just prescribe emergency opioids like my psychiatrist prescribes emergency xanax. like i promise i wont use them unless is it BAD but that option at home would keep my chronically ill ass out of the er 😢🙃

I have NEVER gone to the ER when I have a pain flare. Why would I subject myself to that when I'm able to handle my care at home: Epsom salt bath, glass of wine (just one!) and report at the next appointment at PM MD office.

I had severe lower right quadrant pain the right side of my belly button that was making me nauseous , swear and dizzy went to the er , had to wait 5 hours in the waiting room getting worse , and finally when I got back they did an IV and tried to tell me by just taking urine and blood work that I had a UTI and it was just uti pain, and told me they would give me A toradol shit and IV fluids and I'd be released. I begged them to do tests bc I'd had, had UTI before and it didn't feel like this and explained my pain was getting worse , I was dismissed . went home. .the pain continued, I couldn't sleep and by 13 hours after I left the hospital I had so much pain I fainted, was taken by ambulance to a diff hospital where I was quickly diagnosed with a burst appendix , and rushed to surgery. I ended up almost being septic bc the first hospital and er doctored ignored my plea, and told me that bc I was talking and walking that I wasn't in 10/10 pain and didn't have anything "life threatening " to worry about that it was just a UTI to follow up w my pcp and get antibiotics.

Thanks to you I had the nerve to ask my pcp for something for breakthrough pain. And he said of course. And I have a subscription now for those times. Thank you for giving me the courage to ask

So what is the solution for those of us who have chronic pain who have pain that exceeds what we can tolerate? How are we supposed to know if it is just a flair vs. something more serious? What you're suggesting isn't a bad plan. I have an emergency bag to handle everything I can at home but sometimes it's not enough and expecting a person to wait it out until the office is open is asking way too much for a "it might be just a pain flair'.

Yes, this is my "flare bag" that I have set up! It is a bag (some use a cart) that has extra pain medications, pain creams like tiger balm, tissues, baby wipes, heat pad, ice packs that you break, iPhone charger, books to read, solo card games, snacks, water bottle, etc. I use it when I am basically bed ridden from a flare or I just cannot move a ton to do stuff.

I had an increase in bone pain due to an ongoing battle with cancer that's metastasized to the bone. I was treated as a pain med abuser even though the physician knew my diagnosis. And it seems to only occur at night where my palliative care NP is unavailable. I will speak to her about this plan. Thank you

I have a preflare (first sign of possible flare) and full flare plan. I created them myself through education, trial and error. You're talking about a cooperative effort with medical providers but that's not easy to achieve. For many, it's not realistic. Before pain medication was strictly regulated, visits to the er meant Torodol injections and pain meds. 👩🏼‍⚕️

I need a plan like this, but I think I have/do everything except having rescue meds because I have a pain patch.

Lost feeling in my leg from chronic back pain/injury last Tuesday, rolled my ankle and thought it was broken. Sat in an er for hours, now my back is sitting at a 9.5/10. (From sitting, using crutches, and using a mop boot) Apt to see my doctor tomorrow hoping like hell they will give me some suitable pain relief
